Essen Haus isn’t just a throwback; it’s the enemy of today’s isolated, screen-centric, mobile device dominated tech world. It’s a place you go with large groups of family and friends to spend quality time together doing people things: drinking good beer out of large glassware (get the boot!), eating food that’s not great but good enough (especially those pretzels!), talking and laughing and dancing (to live polka music!). Ditch the phones for a night and get a taste of some genuine counter culture good times.

Very mediocre experience. Host and wait staff could not answer questions about the menu. Tabletops were sticky. Shortcuts taken with the food: German potato salad tasted like the canned product (not bad but definitely not made in house), red cabbage had no seasoning, the apple strudel did not have actual sliced apples - more like apple pie filling without apples, the pretzels were overly salted and dry. Bratwurst and sauerkraut were good. Fun atmosphere and decor.

A Madison, old school/beer, staple that remains in existence - despite all of the chatter on closing for good. For a large party, it can be a fun place to get your fill of German biers or boots or 5 Litre Steins - and listen to polka music which definitely helps and adds to more of a party vibe. If our large group wasn't there on the Saturday night we arrived, the place would have been pretty quite. Server was on Day #3, and a bit overwhelmed by it all - especially the beer orders. If you've never consumed a boot, you should do it at least once in your life. (You can always share, too.) For the enthusiasic ones, share that 5L. It's a place that is known for the large format drinking vessels, and "novelty" drinking - but it can be fun.

We had dinner here in my husband's birthday. Waiter was excellent (Timothy). All of the food was delicious and we loved that we got free pretzels to start! They even offered a free shot or dessert for his birthday so he went with the mint chocolate cake. It was a massive portion, we couldn't finish it! Would definitely go here again.

First time here and first time eating German food. They have a great selection of food, both German and American. Got some warm delicious pretzels with amazing dipping sauces. Best experienced I've had for trying something new, and with live polka music on Fridays and Saturdays. 10/10 highly recommend, and sure will be back again in the near future.
