I ended up at Paul's Club one night after a comedy show nearby because a couple friends insisted it was one of those classic Madison bars you have to experience at least once. From outside, it honestly looked like a regular college bar, but once we walked in, the atmosphere immediately felt different from the louder, more chaotic spots farther down State Street. The first thing everyone notices is the giant tree inside the bar. I thought people were exaggerating when they mentioned it, but there’s literally this huge tree centerpiece in the middle of the place that somehow gives the bar a weirdly cozy vibe. It sounds strange, but it actually works. Paul’s Club is especially known around Madison for its unique tree centerpiece, relaxed bar atmosphere, and longtime State Street presence. We grabbed drinks near the bar while waiting for a table, and the bartender was surprisingly friendly even though the place was getting packed. I ordered an old fashioned while my friend tried one of their mystery shots mostly for fun. The drinks were strong without feeling overpriced compared to a lot of downtown bars. Online reviews also mention the bartenders, strong pours, and social atmosphere as reasons people keep coming back. What I liked most was the mix of people there. You had students, older regulars, couples coming from shows, and random groups playing darts or pool. It felt lively without turning completely obnoxious. The only downside was how crowded it became later at night. Finding seating after 10 PM was almost impossible, and the noise level definitely jumped once the weekend crowd rolled in. Still, Paul’s Club felt more genuine and memorable than a lot of bars that try too hard to be trendy. It’s the kind of place where you stop in for “one drink” and somehow end up staying most of the night.

This was one of the worst service experiences I’ve ever had. I came in with my friends on a chill Tuesday night for one of my friends’ birthday. The bartender was standoff-ish and barely acknowledged us even though we were one of the only groups there. When he got our order he rolled his eyes and made the drinks. When I asked him for water he completely ignored me, came back a few minutes later, and carelessly set the water glass in front of me. Overall, the bartender’s attitude made our experience really uncomfortable. Which is unfortunate, because the overall atmosphere of the place is pretty cool.

My husband and I had a terrible experience today when trying to enter Paul’s Club. We had our passports with us, as well as our translated marriage certificate. I am 19 years old, and my husband is over 21. As soon as we presented our passports, the security guard at the door refused us entry and would not even look at our marriage certificate, which showed that my husband would be responsible for me here in the U.S. In addition to that, he was extremely rude and disrespectful. He raised his voice at both of us while forcing us away from the entrance, used his body to block us (even though we were not trying to force our way in—we only wanted him to review our documents), pointed aggressively at a sign stating that alcohol consumption under 21 is prohibited, and told us to “get out.” The issue is that I am visibly pregnant—38 weeks—and I do not consume alcohol. We were only there to celebrate a friend’s birthday. Shortly after, our friend tried to speak with him and explain the situation, but once again he showed complete indifference, simply stating that he was “doing his job.” My husband and I would not have had an issue if the bar had a strict policy of not allowing me to enter, even accompanied by my husband. However, the level of rudeness and lack of professionalism we experienced was completely unacceptable. He did not seem qualified to be in a security position, as he refused to review documentation and treated people in a disrespectful manner, regardless of whether they were customers or potential patrons. After reading other reviews, I noticed that poor service appears to be a common issue at this establishment, which is disappointing, as the venue itself seems comfortable and appealing. However, after today’s experience, I have no interest in trying to visit again or recommending it to friends. We had an extremely unpleasant experience at Paul’s Club in the early hours of 04/04, around 12:10 AM, when we went there to celebrate a friend’s birthday. I was accompanied by my wife, who is 19 years old and 38 weeks pregnant. Given her condition, we brought our original marriage certificate, duly translated, to demonstrate our relationship and my legal responsibility for her. I would also like to emphasize that, due to her pregnancy, she would not consume any alcoholic beverages, nor would I. When we attempted to enter the venue, we were approached by a security guard who, from the very beginning, displayed a disrespectful and hostile attitude, especially when we presented our passports. As we explained our situation, he refused to even look at the documentation we provided, repeatedly pointing to a sign stating that alcohol consumption is prohibited for individuals under 21. We reiterated that there would be no alcohol consumption and that we were fully aware of my legal responsibility for her. However, the security guard began raising his voice aggressively, interrupting any attempt at dialogue and, in an extremely rude manner, shouted “get out of here,” forcing us to leave in a humiliating way while pushing us with his body. We fully understand that some establishments in the United States choose not to allow entry to individuals under 21, even in situations such as ours. We do not dispute this decision, even though there was no sign indicating a prohibition on entry—only a prohibition on alcohol consumption. What caused us indignation was the completely disrespectful and aggressive manner in which we were treated, especially considering my wife’s pregnancy. The security guard refused to listen and simply kept shouting at us to leave. There was no line to enter—only the guard’s arrogance. I do not recommend this place.

This place is really cool. We hung out here in the middle of the day and it was not very crowded. Has great atmosphere, comfortable seating, and nice staff. Prices were fair. We tried to go back later but it was “at capacity”. The tree in the middle of the bar was cool. The music they played was also good.
