I lived downtown for a short time while working near the Capitol, and Capitol Centre Market honestly became one of those places I ended up visiting almost every day without planning to. At first, I only stopped in because it was convenient and within walking distance of my apartment, but after a while it turned into my regular grocery spot for late-night snacks, quick dinners, and random essentials I forgot to buy elsewhere. What surprised me most was how much bigger the store feels once you walk inside. From the outside it looks like a small neighborhood market, but they somehow manage to pack in almost everything — groceries, deli food, frozen meals, fresh produce, drinks, even random household stuff like batteries and medicine. A lot of locals online mention the same thing about the store feeling larger and more stocked than expected. One night after getting home from a delayed flight around 11 PM, I stopped there just hoping to grab milk and something quick to eat. Not only were they still open, but the deli area actually had fresh prepared food left instead of empty shelves.

Nice market if you don’t want to go to a high-end branded store or a grocery store that’s too far away you can just come here. The store itself is nice, but the issue begins with some of the staff. Now mind you, I’m a woman of color, and I understand that Madison is a college town that is very predominantly white. When you go into places like this, you may not see many people of color working there, and I understand that. My experience could just be my opinion or even an assumption but this is how I felt. Two particular employees, Nick and Lee, were my cashiers. I noticed Lee talking to one of his friends, who was a white guy. When I came to the register, I chose not to use self-checkout because I simply don’t like it. I prefer human interaction and good customer service. As I approached the register, he acted like he didn’t see me at first. While ringing up my items, he didn’t say “Hi,” “How are you doing?” or anything at all. I also had coupons for some of my items, and he seemed shocked that I had them. He asked where I got them, and I responded, “From the company where else would I get them?” As a woman of color, experiences like this are exhausting. It’s 2026, and no one should feel unwelcome while simply trying to shop. The only staff members who were genuinely kind and welcoming to me were the Black and brown employees. Unfortunately, my interactions with some of the white male staff felt cold, dismissive, and phony. It felt prejudiced, misogynistic, and incredibly disappointing. This is exactly why many people of color feel uncomfortable entering predominantly white spaces because subtle discrimination, dismissiveness, and being made to feel “other” are very real experiences. I’m not sure if a supervisor or manager will see this review, but your cameras will clearly show who I am and who I’m referring to, because I rarely shop here. Such a perfect grocery store! I got everything I wanted except for some frozen staple items at the Asian-inspired section - dumplings, gyoza etc. I love the self checkout option and the staff helping was awesome! It is clean, has the standard grocery store items with more variety - cold food, cooked food, raw items etc and then convenience household items like soap, cleaning supplies, and toiletries etc. located downtown is a plus and open till 12am on some days!

Nice staff, but beware: the self checkout register froze several times and I was asked to pay at a staffed register. The cashier entered the amount and apparently made a typo, as I was charged more than three times of what the original price was! No receipt given. No reaction from the store. Not OK... !

A real treat to have in the downtown area. The store is well stocked and has even expanded it's offerings to include a deli in recent years. They have plenty of local options to choose from and that is appreciated. I haven't used their delivery services, but I see their cars around a lot, so it seems like people love it. Side story: they have a Coinstar there and I had an amazing time depositing my coins. First off, I had way too many coins saved up from well over a decade. It took me over 10 minutes to get all the coins in the machine. I had 799 dimes (!!!) and 1,754 pennies (!!). Anythings I try to complete the transaction but it shows an error! Thankfully it let me know that my coins were safe. I walked to customer service and told them I had a problem with the machine and he grabbed his keys and a brought a newer staff member with and back to the beast we went. After explaining that there are two keys, he showed how to open up the machine. Then, he located the error message. "The Hopper Sensor is dirty" read the machine. I thought that was hilarious. I asked if this happened often and he chuckled and said, "No, not really." Anyways, he cleaned the hopper sensor and soon I had my money!
